Facebook bought Instagram in 2012. After the purchase, the number of Instagram users rapidly increased. A long term effect of the purchase is people can globally communicate through posting pictures and videos mainly captured on digital camera phones.

“For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we’ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests."

Snapchat was founded in 2011 by Bobby Murphy and Evan Spiegel. The platform is based around communicating through sending photos. Around 150 million people use Snapchat daily, which results in billions of pictures and videos being communicated across the globe.

“Snapchat isn’t about capturing the traditional Kodak moment. It’s about communicating with the full range of human emotion -- not just what appears to be pretty or perfect."
